- This unlocked mobile phone from Nokia is 100 percent compatible with GSM carriers such as AT&T as well as T Mobile. HOWEVER, the Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone is NOT compatible with all carriers. It won't work with CDMA carriers (Verizon Wireless, AllTel, and Sprint) to name a few.
- The Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone comes with a full QWERTY keyboard, a GPS navigator that's beefed up with Nokia maps, Wireless Fidelity networking, Bluetooth stereo music, a whopping 32 GB internal memory, coupled with an expandable Micro SD card slot.
- The battery life of the Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone is also impressive, giving you 9.5 hours of GSM talk time, 6 hours of talk time through 3G, and up to 430 hours (that's a whopping 17.9 days) of standby time.
Let's take a look at the good and bad stuff of the Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone...
Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone - The Good
- Having used other Nokia phones, I must say that their GPS has improved over the already great GPS navigators that they have on their previous high end smart phones. The Nokia maps suite works very well and if you don't like that, no problem! You can always download Google maps.
The Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone's GPS navigator captures fast and works better when inside vehicles better than my previous Nokia smart phone - the N95.
- The screen - it's very beautiful! One would get the impression that the Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone is a little laptop. While the typing takes a little while to get used to for some, it only took me minutes to be adept at typing on the Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone.
The combination of touch and keys gives you the best of both worlds! Touching gives you excellent User Interface navigation - the menus, options, settings, and everything else are just a click or two away.
BUT typing on the screen is sometimes annoying (at least for me) and this is easily resolved by the full QWERTY keyboard.
- The camera of the Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone is perfect! It feels like shooting a DVD like video and the 2 LEDs put out more light than my previous Nokia phones.
Here is a points of improvement about the camera though - a Xenon flash would have been better. I have seen it produce better lighting, which results to better pictures BUT I don't really mind it. The camera comes with a cover, which when moved, activates the camera - composed of Carl Zeiss lens as well as a 5 mega pixel resolution.
The Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone also comes with a secondary camera that's good for video chat.
- The web browser of this mobile phone is excellent. It can do flash and Java based websites without any difficulty. When it comes to web browsing experience, the Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone rivals the iPhone. There are truckloads of unrestricted applications - and the OVI store is an excellent step.
The Bad Side
There is one problem I have with the Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone though - the User Interface bogs down! The Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone jumps from screen to screen. Being a programmer, one of the things I have learned is that in the User Interface, you should keep something moving ALL THE TIME!
I think it's a lot better if Nokia invested into a higher speed processor and only throttle it down when not needed.
